How does a comparison between German citizens during WW2 and today’s Catholics make you feel?
It’s a valid comparison in some ways, though there is also a large number of ordinary Catholics who abhor at what the church has been doing. In Ireland there are tens of thousands of victims, and many of them have ended up as homeless or as part of the underclass. Since the scandal broke, very many people have realised this, and so they are a day-to-day reminder of the long-term harm that has been done. Those legal investigators and victims groups who have been trying to get justice have been blocked by the church every step of the way, the main culprit being the Vatican that holds the evidence and continues to refuse access to it. Prosecutors need this information to make good cases and bring successful prosecutions, but all access is still being blocked. Amongst ordinary people, many still Catholic, there is a great revulsion. There seems to be a growing gulf between the local believers and the Vatican, as local clergy who want real change are being hampered by this continuing Vatica
