How does a clock measure the time of day on Mars?
Several ideas have been put forth regarding Martian clocks. Since a Martian sol is only three percent longer than an Earth day, the most straightforward approach is to simply stretch Earths units of time into slightly longer hours, minutes, and seconds (this system is used by NASA and JPL). Another approach is to add 39 minutes, 35.2 seconds at the end of 24 hours. Still another idea is to have a “metric” clock based on powers of ten.
