How Does a Barrier Coat Work?

Metal corrosion is a chemical reaction between the metal surface and its environment. This corrosion can either occur in a gaseous environment or a wet environment. For our connectors we are primarily concerned with the wet environment. Specifically in a wet environment, corrosion occurs when an electrolyte transfers ions from one material to another. With connectors it is the steel which loses its electrons to the environment. For this reaction to occur the electrolyte must me in contact with the metal. The barrier coat prohibits this contact, which means the metal does not give up its electrons, or corrode.
