In a typical Business Intelligence architecture, there is an underlying data warehouse (usually a relational database) that supports SQL queries and a BI analysis layer that provides a way of producing tabular and graphical reports. The database manager itself is capable of supporting a fairly wide range of analysis (although it may operate efficiently only within limited constraints) but it has no native graphical user interface. Using it requires expertise in the use of SQL and computer programming languages. The BI layer supplies a sophisticated interface that makes it possible for even non technical people to manipulate the data and create presentation-quality reports but, in doing so, constrains the range of analysis that the user can do.
