The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act dictates that students identified as having special needs are entitled to specialized educational services. To ensure that the specific needs of a student are met, special education teachers must compose individualized goals for that child. These goals are recorded in an IEP, or Individualized Education Plan. The teacher must ensure that the goals are appropriate for the student and that accomplishing them will help the student progress. Review the student’s previous goals or the results of testing if no previous goals exist. If the student had previous IEP goals, you should compose new ones that build upon the skills that she developed by completing the prior goals.
