Reading and comprehension are important. “Old School” thinking had students writing a book report … a couple of pages telling others about the book. This type of reading assessment is boring for all concerned and does not always clearly represent the child’s understanding of the book. There are much better ways to judge if a student has read a book thoroughly. Create an advertisement for the book. Children must justify reasons why their book is a great choice for others to read by creating an ad. An advertisement requires children to think and judge the book then come up with specific reasons to convince others to read the book. Rather than just say “the book was good” the child should write for example “the book had many action scenes in each chapter.” The advertisement could be in the form of a small picture, poster, video clip or brochure.
