A short story’s setting does not have to be as extensive as the setting for a novel or series, but it does have to be consistent. Whether your book is set in your hometown or in a galaxy far, far away, you must have a firm grasp on your story’s location. For a single-use setting for a short story, a page or so may well be enough to create your setting. For short stories that may become longer works or that deal with very complex settings, more elaborate systems may be necessary. Decide what the story is about and who will tell it.
