Whether you have been diligently keeping a diary since childhood or have always been told by friends that the personal anecdotes you’ve shared with them would make a great book someday, the task of compiling your memories into a marketable book can be a daunting one. You need some guidance in collecting your thoughts about life in the “past lane” and deciding what should be put into print. Read the autobiographies of other people to glean ideas about how to structure your own. Pay attention to whether they liberally reference external historic events, include quotes and observations from other individuals, and/or incorporate photographs and correspondence. Make note of whether the text is written in present tense, as if the author doesn’t know what will happen next (i.e., a diary format), or is written in a retrospective voice, with analytical commentary as to why each of the events and relationships was significant.
