Parachute cord, also known as paracord or 550 cord, is often used for a cheap and reliable method of knife handle wrapping. The paracord provides a positive grip, as well as serving as emergency line when needed. Parachute cord is a set of nylon ropes braided together to create a small, incredibly strong rope. While knife wrapping can be done in a variety of ways, one method is simpler than others. Use a lighter to burn and seal the end of the parachute cord before working with it. Pull the end of the parachute cord through the bottom hardware or handle mounting hole in the knife handle. Place a short length (about a third of the handle length) of cord flat against the handle to be wrapped over. Wrap the parachute cord tightly around the handle, starting at the bottom and working upward. Be sure to lay the cord flat while tightening it.
