A ranch hand spends long hours in heat, cold, rain and other weather extremities, without much time for breaks or relaxation. • Build up experience in the areas of agriculture and animal husbandry. While some ranches provide training, most require some experience as a ranch hand or similar position. Get a job or volunteer on a ranch or farm. A position on a landscape or public works crew is also good preparation. • Sign up for a working ranch vacation or join a guest program at a ranch. You have to pay for a ranch vacation, but it will allow you to get a taste of what it’s like to work as a ranch hand as well as a little experience.
