Electrical sub-panels are used to expand the circuit breaker capacity of an existing service panel as well as a load center in areas of high load concentrations i.e. an all electric kitchen or woodworking shop. Sub-panels are wired the same as the main service panel with a couple of important exception. Unlike in the main service panel, the neutral bar in a sub-panel can’t be bonded over to (physically connected to) the system grounding bar or to the sub-panel enclosure.
