A single pole switch is a switch that has only two positions, either on or off. Wiring this switch with 14-2 gauge romex cable to a wall outlet will allow you to control power to the outlet. The outlet will be configured so the bottom half is always “hot” and the top half is on or off, pending the control from the switch. Once complete, you can turn on a plugged-in light before entering a room or going down a stairway by simply turning on a switch. Locate the circuit breaker, in the main service panel, for the wall switch and outlet to be connected and turn them off. Unscrew the screws on the wall switch cover plate and set the plate aside.
