How Do You Wire A Receptacle To A Switch?
Connecting a wall outlet with a switch is a convenient way to turn on and off lights from a distance or to control other appliances and fixtures. The wiring process is quite simple and can be accomplished in less than an afternoon. In most configurations power to the outlet is always flowing, but one of the receptacles is controlled by a switch. This way you can have one receptacle always hot for convenience. The receptacles are normally connected by a brass tab, but in this setup the tab is removed, allowing them to function independently. Turn off the power to the circuit at the service panel. Find the receptacle closest to the new receptacle location. This will serve as the power source. Remove it from its box, but do not disconnect the wires. Cut holes for the new receptacle and switch, using the boxes as templates. Remove the baseboards and molding along the path from the power supply to the receptacle and then to the switch. The cables will run along this path. Cut wiring access
