You can wire a hot tub for GFCI protection in two ways. You can install a GFCI receptacle-Interrupter at the tub’s location or you can install a GFCI circuit breaker in the service panel. If there is only one receptacle on the circuit, the hot tub receptacle, either approach will be equally quick and easy. If there are more receptacle downstream from the hot tub receptacle, replacing the circuit breaker with a GFCI circuit breaker is the easier route to take because it eliminates the need to deal with feed-through wiring. Turn off the circuit breaker protecting the receptacle circuit you are working on. Remove the receptacle cover plate and remove the receptacle from the box. If there’s more than one black wire and one white wire in the box, more than one cable entering the box, there are more receptacles downstream of the one that you are working on.
