How Do You Wire A Guitar Push-Button Kill Switch?
Installing a kill switch on an electric guitar is a convenient way to interrupt the signal from the instrument’s pickup or pickups to the output jack. This can be used as a stuttering, staccato musical effect in its own right and as a standby mode to help cut down on sources of noise when not playing. Two main methods exist for accomplishing the “kill” function. One method uses an on-on toggle switch (dual pole, dual throw) wired between the volume and/or tone controls and the output jack. Another variation uses a momentary contact switch, such as a doorbell push button. This allows for rapid on-off switching, but negates the standby function unless the switch is continually depressed. For reference, the six terminals as viewed from the bottom of the switch are labeled: 1 2 3 4 5 6 Solder a jumper wire between terminal 1 and terminal 2.
