How Do You Wire A Central Air Conditioner Thermostat?

Replacing a thermostat is pretty simple and doesn’t require any special skills. You can replace your old thermostat with a programmable one to save energy. Take off the cover off the existing thermostat. It should just pop off. Label each wire with a sticky label based on the terminal they are attached to (eg. Y, C, R etc). Unscrew each terminal that has a wire and take off the wires you labeled in the previous step. Unscrew the existing thermostat and detach from the wall. Pop the cover off the new thermostat. Snake the wires in through the hole of the thermostat before attaching to the wall. Secure it on the wall using the screws provided with the new thermostat. (Depending on the sizes of the two thermostats, you may have to patch the wall). Attach each wire to the coresponding terminal. This is where the labeling from step 2 comes in handy.
