How Do You Wire 2 Electrical Plugs Using One Power Source?
The reasons for wiring two outlets using one power source are numerous. Perhaps you need two outlets behind the TV, or maybe you need one where there isn’t one available. For whatever reason, you will find it convenient to have that second outlet. It’s easy to wire two plugs using one power source as long as you follow a few simple rules. Don’t be intimidated, be informed and find joy in knowing that you did it yourself. Decide what size of wire you need. You can do this by looking at the breaker that feeds the outlets. Is it a 15 amp breaker or a 20 amp breaker? You need to use #12 AWG (American Wire Gauge) wire for a 20 amp outlet and #14 AWG wire for a 15 amp outlet. The wires coming to the first plug will be black, white and green (or a bare copper wire). So you will need those wires going to the second outlet as well. You can purchase single wires or two wire cables with ground. The single wires are run in metal conduit and the cables are run without conduit. Get the right plugs.
