How Do You Weatherstrip Steel Doors?
Steel doors provide extra protection against home invasions due to their steel sheet exterior. However, they leave a home vulnerable to invasion by cold air drafts. Cold air slips under the steel door through the gap between the bottom of the door and the threshold. To prevent this unwanted intruder, add a weatherstrip. This nylon gasket installs under the door, forming a tight seal when closed and blocking cold air. Place the steel door on a work bench or table. Place the weather stripping along the bottom edge of the door. Using a magic marker, make a mark on the side of the weather stripping where it overlaps the door. Remove the weather stripping from the door and cut at the marks with a pair of hand snips. Place the weather stripping back on the bottom edge of the door. Make marks through the mounting holes on the weather stripping with a magic marker, indicating the location of the mounting holes. Drill out the holes with a 1/16-inch carbide bit and power drill.
