Dish gardens require proper moisture in order to thrive. How and when you water your dish garden will depend on a number of factors, including the varieties of plants in the garden, the composition of the soil and drainage layers in the container, the container material, and whether the container has drainage holes. Mist your plants on a regular basis to provide needed moisture without risking damage to the roots. Add insecticidal soaps to the watering medium to guard against pests like aphids and mites. Test the soil’s moisture level once or twice a week. When the soil feels dry to the touch, water around the edges of the pot with small amounts of lukewarm water, adding only enough water to moisten soil within about an inch of the outer perimeter.
