How Do You Volunteer With A Homeland Security Program?
Homeland security programs train citizens in first aid, emergency response and community safety initiatives so that a reserve corps can promote safety and aid municipal emergency services in the event of a disaster. Follow these steps to volunteer for a program. Apply only with organizations that offer volunteer opportunities that are officially endorsed by the Department of Homeland Security. These organizations include Citizen Corps, the U.S.A. Freedom Corps and Learn & Serve America (see Resources below). Familiarize yourself with the initiatives undertaken at each of the volunteer groups. These range from first aid, fire and police volunteers to educational programs and public safety watches. Participate in the program that interests you the most, or one for which you will be qualified without needing additional training.
