The La Brea Tar Pits, a prehistoric pool of muck and mire that trapped several ice age mammals, is located amid the downtown museums and television studios of central Los Angeles. As the city grew around these tar pits, early city planners, aware of the significance, fenced the pits off, built a pleasant park around them and designed a museum on the premises to showcase the finds. With the exception of the strong scent rising from the pools, which is similar to that of a re-roofing job, La Brea provides a pleasant afternoon for education and relaxation.
