The Cathedral of St. John the Divine in New York City has undergone two main periods of construction, from 1892 to 1941 and from 1971 to 1997, and it’s doubtful that construction will be resumed in the near future, if ever. Nevertheless, the church is a fascinating structure, representing a variety of architectural styles, and is a popular venue for performing arts and memorial services. Start at the Amsterdam Avenue entrance and take some time to examine the Portal of Paradise, which features a carving of Christ enthroned in glory.
