How Do You Visit Sullivans Island, South Carolina?
Originally called Moultrieville, this 3-mile long barrier island on the Atlantic Ocean north of Charleston has historic roots that go back to the 1700s. Victorian cottages, quaint shops and seafood restaurants, a lighthouse and a Revolutionary War fort are a few of the attractions and landmarks that make this one of the prettiest beach community retreats on the South Carolina coast. Begin your visit at the Fort Moultrie National Monument, built in 1776 as a Palmetto log fort to guard Charleston Harbor during the Revolutionary War. Go to the Visitor Center Museum 1214 Middle Street to view exhibits, artifacts, a 20-minute orientation film, purchase tour tickets and obtain literature on the fort’s development. The fort also features cannon and an observation deck (see Resources below). Walk along the beach, collect sea shells and enjoy the view of Fort Sumter in the harbor as well as the passing pleasure boats and commercial ships. Drive to the northern end of the island and park in the
