You can view it best from Ecola State park. It is one mile off shore. It was first lit in 1881 after several years of difficult construction. It was in service until 1957. It is now privately owned and set up as a cemetery at sea and designed to hold up to 500,000 urns of ashes. It is a great final resting place for seafarers and lighthouse enthusiasts. Yaquina Bay Lighthouse is located just on the outskirts of Newport. It was first lit in 1871. It was only used for a few short years. In 1974 it was restored and is now an Oregon State Park.
