The city of Phoenix has nine sister cities around the globe, one of which is Himeji, Japan. To celebrate this cultural diversity, architects, planners, landscapers and philanthropists, along with city staff, designed and built the Japanese Friendship Garden in downtown Phoenix. The outdoor garden houses a koi pond, footbridges, a tea house, waterfall and many varieties of Asian flora and fauna. It’s a restful oasis in the middle of a busy urban hub and a favorite with visitors and locals alike. The garden is open nine months of the year with special programs, including tea ceremonies and festivals, throughout the winter months. Leave Sky Harbor airport and take I-10 west. Exit on 7th Street and head west (right) to 3rd Avenue, Margaret T. Hance Park. The park is located just above the I-10 tunnel at 1125 N. 3rd Avenue.
