How Do You Visit Great Smoky Mountains National Park?
Great Smoky Mountains National Park draws more visitors each year than any other national park in the United States. Although the park lies less than a day’s drive from over one third of the country’s population, it also draws visitors because of the wide array of activities and scenery. With over 800 miles of trails in the Appalachian Mountains, hikers in particular will delight in the park. Drive on the more than 300 miles of roads to see historic buildings and mountain vistas. Auto touring has been a popular activity in the park for a number of decades. Pick up a self-guide booklet in the park for some of the more traveled routes: Cades Cove Loop Road, Newfound Gap Road and Roaring Fork Motor Nature Trail. See historic log buildings throughout the park. Almost 80 different structures including houses, schools, barns and churches have been preserved or restored within the park. Many are located along the popular self-auto tour roads including Cades Cove, Cataloochee and Roaring Fork
