Castle Neuschwanstein is located in southwest Bavaria in Germany, and was built in the 19th century . Castle Neuschwanstein was the inspiration for the famous Sleeping Beauty castle in the Disney film. The castle was built by King Ludwig II of Bavaria, beginning in 1869. It was never finished, as King Ludwig was declared insane and later died in 1886. The castle became open to the public that same year. Get to Bavaria, near the towns of Schwangau and Fussen. This area is almost directly east of Zurich, Switzerland and southwest of Munich, Germany. The Austrian border is close by. Your goal is to reach Hohenschwangau, the town directly below Castle Neuschwanstein. To arrive by plane, your best bet is to fly into Munich and then take local trains to reach Hohenschwangau.
