Gas water heaters are very efficient in heating water in your home. They use natural gas as fuel and when this gas is burned, it not only heats your water but it creates toxic combustion gases such as carbon monoxide. These gases must be vented outside and typically do so by means of a galvanized sheet metal duct. Chances are if your new water heater is gas also, you’ll already have an opening in the chimney to vent your new gas hot water heater to. You’ll need a few tools to complete this task. Plan the route of your venting. You want the shortest possible length of ducting from the hot water heater to the chimney. Measure the distance and purchase the required amount of sheet metal ducting and elbows. Install the sheet metal ducting from the vent outlet of the water heater to the chimney.
