How Do You Vent A Hot Water Heater?
If you own a gas water heater you may have noticed a galvanized vent pipe coming out of the top and running to your chimney. The pipe is necessary because when your hot water heater burns natural gas to heat your water, toxic gases result from the combustion of the natural gas. These toxic gases, mainly carbon monoxide, need to be vented to the exterior of the building to prevent illness or death. This makes it imperative to vent a hot water heater to the chimney after installation. Measure the distance from the vent outlet on the hot water heater to the hole on the chimney where the previous water heater vent went into. Purchase the required amount of galvanized sheet metal duct and elbows. Start at the vent outlet and install your galvanized sheet metal duct to your chimney opening. Connect the duct by inserting the crimped end of one piece into the noncrimped end of the next piece. Secure each connection with 4 sheet metal screws. Cut off pieces of duct as necessary with your snips
