How Do You Vent A Gas Water Heater?

0

Gas water heaters burn natural gas in order to heat your water. Toxic gases are created when burning the natural gas. One of the most toxic gases is carbon monoxide. If allowed to remain in the building, the carbon monoxide can cause injury and/or death to its occupants. For this reason it is vital that you vent your gas water heater. Gas water heaters are typically vented to the home’s chimney through galvanized metal duct. Measure the distance from the water heater to the chimney. Purchase all required galvanized duct and elbows from your local home improvement store. Core a hole into the chimney if there is not already an existing one in there. Use a hammer drill and concrete core bit to drill the hole. The hole will need to be 1/4 inch larger than the metal duct size. Start at the water heater and install the galvanized metal duct toward the chimney. Each joint is connected by slipping the non-crimped end over the crimped end. Four sheet metal screws evenly spaced hold it together.
