Varnishing and refinishing your oak floors will add longevity and a new look to such a vital part of your home. Varnish is a transparent, glossy liquid mostly used to refinish and protect wood floors. Refinishing can mean using a glossy varnish, or it can mean staining the wood. If you simply want to protect and add a gloss finish to your floors, varnishing is what you’ll need. If you want to stain and protect your wood floors, refinishing then varnishing will be the best approach. Remove all furniture from the room and clean debris from the floor. Vacuum, dust and sweep the room. This is essential in making the other steps easier and cleaner. Sand off the old finish using the push sander (if you are varnishing a smaller room, use the hand sander.) You can rent a push sander from most rental stores.
