All children know the colors of the traffic light by an early age. Using those colors can keep a classroom in control. Preparation for the project involves using the traffic light signal meanings. First, you need to teach the children when the red circle goes up STOP immediately what they are doing and look at the teacher. If a child does not do this and everyone has learned this, give the child a yellow circle, square or clothespin next to his name as a warning like the caution light. If the child persists in disruptive behavior remove the yellow clothespin, circle or square and replace with a red one leading to time out or separation until the child is ready to follow the directions. If the child stops the disruptive behavior, reward the child by returning the color of the clothespin, square or circle back to green for good behavior.
