Setting circles are used for locating faint objects in the night sky with the help of star charts. Note that your telescope has two setting circles – RA (Right Ascension) and DEC (Declination). The RA setting circle calculates the angular distance of a celestial body from the vernal equinox along the celestial equator. The DEC setting circle measures the angular distance to celestial object from the celestial equator. Steps to use the setting circles can be broadly divided into three parts – polar aligning your telescope, calibrating the RA setting circle and finding objects using the setting circles. Here is how you can do it: Detach the telescope tube and the counterweight from the mount. Note the latitude and time zone of your location. You may use a GPS unit to ascertain this.
