How Do You Use Teflon Plumbing Tape?
The purpose of Teflon tape is to create a watertight seal in plumbing fixtures. It acts like a putty between two pipes by filling in any unwanted gaps in the connection. It’s designed to be used on tapered, threaded pipes and comes in a variety of colors and thicknesses. Each is designed with a specific function in mind. Using Teflon tape takes a few moments to apply and can help prevent major leakage issues. Clean the edge of the pipe on which you will be applying the Teflon tape with steel wool or a wire brush. Unroll a small amount of tape from the spool and ensure that the end isn’t bunched together. Wrap the tape around the male pipe about two threads from the top. Wrap the tape around the pipe two times in the direction the threads run. Smooth the tape over the threads to ensure there are no bubbles or bumps. Screw the desired plumbing fitting onto the Teflon coated pipe.
