How Do You Use Sleeping Pads When Hiking?
On your next hiking trip, a sleeping pad can mean the difference between getting zero sleep and that oh-so-refreshed feeling the next morning. Here are a few ways to use yours pad to stay well-rested. Choose a type. Sleeping pads come in several versions, although a foam pad or self-inflating pad are generally recommended. Choose one that is compact, lightweight and easy to repair. Store it in your pack. Pads are convenient because they can be strapped on the outer bottom of the pack or inside, just above the sleeping bag. If space is tight, use the various bungee cords or straps located on your pack to secure it. Roll it out. Once you’re ready to sleep, place the pad underneath your bag and enjoy the added comfort. Some bags even have clips which attach to the pad itself so you won’t roll off while you’re sleeping. Use it as a lifesaver. In an emergency, a sleeping pad may be used as a flotation device. Be sure that your fellow hikers are aware of this in case they need to save you. I
