How Do You Use Rock Salt To Keep Black Water Tanks From Freezing?

Halite, commonly referred to as rock salt, can be an effective and inexpensive way of keeping your motor home’s waste water holding tank (i.e., black water tank) free of ice during winter. Since most modern holding tanks are made of plastic, corrosion is generally not an issue. If you have metal tanks, consider a very thorough cleaning at the end of the cold season. Close the dump valve after dumping and cleaning your black water tank. Add whatever chemicals you’ve selected to prevent odor and enough water to cover the bottom of the tank. Pay attention to the quantity of water used. Measure out approximately 1 part rock salt to every 4 parts of water used in step 1, and add that to the tank. Any more salt than this is unnecessary, because after a certain point, no more salt will dilute into the water. Using less salt than this will still help, but not to the extent of the 1 to 4 mixture. Clean the black water tank thoroughly at the end of the winter months when the tanks are no longer
