How Do You Use Peat Moss When Planting Shrubs?
Peat moss is a natural organic fertilizer that, according to the Canadian Sphagnum Peat Moss Association, loosens soil so air can circulate around roots; absorbs and conserves moisture and nutrients for extended plant use; and increases the density of sandy soil. The best way to take advantage of peat moss’ benefits is to add it to the soil when you plant your shrub. Dig a hole two to three times as wide as your shrub’s root system and just as deep. Fluff up the ground at the bottom with a garden fork. Set the soil you removed to make the hole aside. Examine your shrub’s roots. Trim off any sections that have rot and any other damage. Put the shrub in the hole. Mix the soil you removed from the hole with peat moss. Figure out how much you’ll need to backfill the hole. Then, divide it into two parts garden soil and one part peat moss to prepare your mixture. Water the shrub. After a few minutes, the soil will settle and sink. Add more peat moss-soil mixture to the hole. Repeat this proc
