Second to using gold or silver leaf, spray paint is an excellent way to apply a smooth, convincingly metallic finish to an object or surface. Prepare your work area. Spray paint should only be used in a well-ventilated area. It is also a good idea to wear a respirator whenever working with spray paint. Use dropcloths, masking paper, or plastic sheeting to cover a large area around the spot where you will work. Spray paint, especially metallic paint, creates an overspray that can leave traces of paint, or a fine coating of paint dust, over an entire room. For ease of clean-up, cover any other objects, surfaces, shelves, and tools with plastic, or work in a spray booth. Prepare the object to be painted. A smooth surface will be most convincing as metal. Sand wooden objects smooth.
