According to the National Institute for Literacy, kindergarten through 3rd grade is a critical time for beginning readers to develop the phonics, vocabulary, text comprehension and phonemic awareness skills needed to become fluent readers. Although these skills are learned in the classroom, children can also greatly benefit from parent-assisted home teaching techniques to ensure that their child will excel in reading, writing and math at an early age.
