How Do You Use Flannel Boards In Kindergarten Literacy Centers?
Literacy centers operate like small learning communities within classrooms and can be greatly enhanced with flannel boards. They’re nice opportunities for students to work hands-on with new concepts, especially with literacy. Reading together, recognizing and practicing with new words, creating words and stories with sentence strips, and handling individual letters to create words are all activities used with flannel boards that build literacy skills. Construct the flannel board using poster-size cardboard, the heavier the better. Cut a piece of felt twice the size of the board and wrap it around, attaching it at the back by stapling it down the center. Duct tape or glue also will work. Cut the felt into smaller pieces of various shapes. These will be used to stick items to the flannel board. Attach a piece of Velcro to the back of each piece and place the items to be used on the flannel board on each piece with tape or glue, if to be used more permanently. Cut another piece of poster
