How Do You Use Bus Wheelchair Lifts?
Most bus lines provide bus wheelchair lifts to accommodate disabled passengers who are unable to use the steps to board the bus. These people include those confined to wheelchairs, orthopedic strollers, scooters and similar devices in addition to riders who use portable oxygen units, crutches, walkers and canes. Wheelchair lifts have a weight restriction–generally 600 pounds–in addition to width restrictions. You may want to check with your bus service to obtain the bus line restrictions. Wait until the other passengers are boarded, staying far enough away from the bus to allow the ramp to come down without hitting your mobility device. If you are not obviously disabled, indicate to the driver you will need to use the bus lift or ramp to board.
