Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) units are pocket-sized devices used post-surgery, after accidents, during labor, and for chronic pain relief. The TENS unit sends small electrical signals through the skin and to the brain, blocking the nerves from sending pain signals. To use a TENS unit for calf pain, you’ll need to know how to use the unit, and where to place the electrodes. TENS units are only available by prescription from a licensed medical provider. Consult with your doctor to determine suitability of the TENS unit for your condition. Clean your calf with rubbing alcohol. Apply a thin coat of gel to the electrodes. Some machines come with already sticky electrodes that do not need gel: refer to the manufacturer’s instructions. Make sure the unit is OFF before placing or removing electrodes.
