How Do You Use A Peak Flow Meter?
• Check to see if the peak flow meter is clear of any obstructions. • Check to make sure nothing is blocking the cursor. • Grasp the peak flow meter within your hand making sure to not obstruct the cursor. Do not block the mouth piece of the peak flow meter with your tongue. • Stand or sit up straight before testing breath function. • Confirm the cursor is set on zero. • Breathe deeply before inserting the peak flow meter into your mouth. • Seal your lips around the meter. • Blow suddenly and hard into the peak flow meter. • Check the cursor reading, set to zero, and repeat the test twice more. • Take or use the highest reading collected from the three breathing tests. • Remember everyone has a “predicted reading” based on their age and height. Remember your own best reading as this information is important to your medical care giver and as part of your asthma self management health plan.
