A mnemonic device is a memory aid that uses visualization and association to help order and retain information. Mnemonics are great practice for supplementing short-term memory and extending long-term recall. Your students will be amazed at how this mnemonic device will help them recall a list of unrelated items. Challenge students to recall and repeat back, in order, lists of random numbers. Begin with a list of three numbers, and pick a student to repeat them. Keep lengthening the list until students cannot repeat the list in order. In most cases, students will be stumped by lists of more than five to seven random numbers. Tell the class you are going to give them a fun, painless and foolproof way to remember, and repeat back in order, a random list of 10 items. Begin building the list.
