Lead core fishing line is larger in diameter than normal fishing line, because it consists of a core of lead wrapped in nylon. The big advantage to fishing lead core line is that you can get good fishing lures deeper when trolling. A good example is going after big Walleye on Lake Erie, where you need to get down forty feet. Lead core is not the only method you can use to accomplish this, but it is viewed as the least complicated method. Normally, lead core line comes in 100-foot lengths, and each 10 feet is a different color. This allows you to figure out how much lead core line you have trolled out, and allows you to calculate the depth, taking into account several other factors including trolling speed and the water temperature.
