How Do You Use A Land Map & Compass?
A land map shows locations, degree markings and the position of the magnetic poles. A compass is a navigational tool that uses the earth’s magnetic poles to help you determine direction. According to Don Geary, author of “Using a Map and Compass”, you can combine these two tools to navigate through most areas. The combination of the two tools, as well as knowing your current location, will allow you to stay on course to your destination. Locate the line of declination on your map. The line of declination is typically a clearly labeled, dotted line, which always points toward the magnetic north. Your compass will inherently point toward the line of declination, rather than pointing directly north. Use the degree markings on your land map to count how many degrees west or east you currently are of the declination line. Remember this number, as it is your declination.
