A boiling water bath canner is an effective way to can many different fruits and vegetables. A boiling water bath canner does not take the place of a pressure canner if a pressure canner is required for a specific canning task. However, a boiling water canner is useful for such foods as apple sauce, canned peaches and pears, tomatoes, and even grape juice! How to use a boiling water bath canner: Place jars and bands into the boiling water bath canner. Fill the canner with water so that the water line is at least one inch above the tops of the jars. I prefer to fill the canner so that two inches of water is above the tops of the jars. Place the boiling water bath canner on the stove top and heat the water to a gentle boil. Heating the water in this way eliminates bacteria which may be present on bands and jars. Process food to go into jars as required as jars are sanitizing in the boiling water bath canner.
