At the end of 2005, Microsoft officially ended support and distribution of Internet Explorer for Mac, reported Macworld. The last release of the program that was compatible with Mac OS 9, Internet Explorer 5.1.7 for Mac OS 8.1 to 9.2.2, came in September of 2002. You can update the version of Internet Explorer on your PowerPC Mac running OS 9 by downloading and installing the final release. Download Internet Explorer 5.1.7 for Mac OS 8.1 to 9.2.2 from the OldApps website (see Resources). Save the file to your Desktop. Quit any open applications. Go to the Desktop and double-click on the “ie5_1_7.bin” file to expand it. Double-click “Internet Explorer 5.1.7.smi” to launch the installer. Follow the onscreen instructions to install the update.
