One way is to run some type of bootable user environment that runs off of a CD or DVD and use it to format the drive. Another is to simply remove the hard drive from the original computer, attach it to another computer, and format it from there. This guide will cover the first method. Download the Ubuntu Live CD from the Ubuntu website. Burn the disc image to a CD. Use whatever burning software you prefer for this task. Insert the Ubuntu disk into the computer with Windows 2000, and reboot the machine. When the Ubuntu screen first pops up, hit the spacebar. When prompted, use the keyboard to select the entry labeled “Try Ubuntu without installing.” Press Enter.
