Superdelegate is a term used to describe the delegates in the Democratic Party that participate in the nomination process, but the so-called superdelegates are not elected delegates like the majority of Democratic Party delegates. Superdelegates are are chosen based on their status within the Democratic Party as past or present officeholders. To understand superdelegates, you must have a greater understanding of the role of delegates as well as the nomination process. Step 1 Know the role of pledged delegates. Once you have an understanding of what a pledged delegate does, you will have a greater understanding of superdelegates and their role in the nomination process. Pledged delegates must announce their support for one of the Democratic candidates, whereas unpledged delegates can vote for whomever they choose.
